Car ‘cannibalism’ surges as parts thieves cash in

Thefts of Car Parking Sensors Surge by 300% Across the Country

Recent data from Admiral Insurance has revealed a significant increase in vehicle parts crime, with a staggering 300% rise in thefts of car parking sensors. The insurer reported 142 claims for stolen parking sensors last year, compared to just 36 claims the previous year. In addition, there were 104 claims for stolen steering wheels and airbags, highlighting a concerning trend in parts theft.

According to Alex Wyard, director of technical underwriting at Allianz, parking sensors are particularly vulnerable to theft due to their accessibility and high resale demand. Criminals view parts theft as a lucrative opportunity to make quick cash, leading to a surge in various types of theft related to cars over the past year.

Wyard explained, “New airbags can cost up to £1200, but thieves sell stolen ones for a fraction of the price. Wing mirrors, catalytic converters, wheels, and car emblems are also popular targets due to their quick resale value.”

One unfortunate victim of vehicle parts theft is Jeremy Merckel, owner of a Volkswagen Golf GTI. In a shocking incident, thieves stole the headlights, front bumper, grille, and bonnet from Merckel’s car in a matter of minutes. This was not the first time his Golf had been targeted, as a similar theft occurred two years prior.

Merckel shared his frustration, stating, “I was fuming when I found out about the theft. It’s incredibly unsettling to have your car vandalized in such a brazen manner. Fortunately, my insurer, Ageas UK, covered the cost of repairs, but I anticipate a significant increase in my insurance premium as a result.”

Despite the challenges faced by victims of parts theft, Merckel’s Golf was successfully repaired and back on the road within two weeks. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing issue of vehicle parts crime plaguing communities nationwide.
