CATL (SHE: 300750) recently unveiled its latest energy storage battery cell, marking another significant step in the company’s commitment to the sector. The 587 Ah high-capacity energy storage-specific cell has entered mass production and delivery after undergoing three years of rigorous research and testing.

During the announcement event in Shanghai, CATL highlighted the cell’s impressive features, including its energy density of 434 Wh/L, a 10 percent improvement over the previous generation. This enhancement allows for a 25 percent increase in energy density for energy storage systems utilizing this cell.

The product is designed to fit mainstream 20-foot containers and 1,500 V PCS voltage and power ranges, streamlining the system structure and reducing the total number of components from 30,000 to 18,000. CATL emphasized that the cell strikes a balance between legal compliance, compatibility with energy storage stations, system integration, and electrochemistry.

Furthermore, the new cell boasts improved reliability, energy density, lifespan degradation, and system efficiency, resulting in a 5 percent increase in the lifecycle investment return rate compared to the previous generation. It has also passed several mandatory standards tests in China and demonstrates no fire or explosion risks under overcharging, thermal runaway, or pinprick conditions.

CATL’s continuous product iterations, including the 280 Ah and 314 Ah variants, have contributed to the deployment of over 256 GWh of energy storage system capacity globally. These cells have been utilized in more than 1,000 energy storage projects worldwide, maintaining a spotless safety record.

As the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, CATL considers energy storage as one of its core businesses. In 2024, the company reported a revenue of RMB 362 billion ($50 billion), with the power battery system business accounting for 69.90 percent of total revenue and the energy storage battery system business contributing 15.83 percent.
