Chinese battery giant CATL (SHE: 300750) has entered into a strategic partnership with Danish shipping company Maersk to promote electrification in the global logistics industry. The collaboration, announced on June 4, will see CATL working with Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals to accelerate the electrification of container handling equipment using high-performance batteries and system-level solutions.
APM Terminals, committed to decarbonization, views this partnership as a key milestone in accelerating its transition towards a more sustainable future. Grant Morrison, the company’s global asset procurement director, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in driving the energy transition within the global logistics industry.
This partnership represents a deepening of the relationship between APM Terminals and CATL, marking a significant step towards the company’s terminal decarbonization strategy through the electrification of container handling equipment. CATL’s executive president of overseas business, Li Xiaoning, highlighted the strategic partnership’s role in developing industry-leading solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at terminals.
CATL and APM Terminals have previously collaborated through the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA) to promote the adoption of electric container handling equipment. ZEPA, established in December 2023 with APM Terminals as a key initiator and CATL as a member, aims to accelerate port decarbonization by making battery-electric container handling equipment more affordable and accessible in the coming decade.
As the world’s largest manufacturer of power batteries, CATL holds a significant share of the global EV battery market. According to data from South Korean market research firm SNE Research, CATL commanded a 38.3 percent share of the market in the first quarter of the year.
In addition to its collaboration with APM Terminals, CATL recently launched a “75#” standardized battery swap pack for heavy-duty trucks, following a similar initiative for passenger cars in December. This move further underscores CATL’s commitment to developing innovative solutions for the electrification of transportation across different sectors.
Overall, the partnership between CATL and APM Terminals represents a significant step towards promoting sustainability in the logistics industry through the adoption of electrification technologies. With a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and driving the energy transition, this collaboration sets a positive example for the industry as a whole.
