CATL and Volkswagen have recently announced a strategic partnership to collaborate on developing cost-competitive battery products for new energy vehicles (NEVs). This collaboration will extend to areas such as battery recycling and battery swap, aiming to drive accelerated electrification in the automotive industry.

CATL, the world’s largest power battery maker, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Volkswagen to deepen their ties in lithium battery research and development, new materials, and parts development for NEVs. Together, they will work on developing technologically advanced and cost-competitive battery concepts and products.

In addition to battery development, the two companies will explore cooperation in areas such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, carbon emission reduction, and transparency in raw material supply. This partnership aims to provide Chinese consumers with cost-effective and high-quality NEV products, leveraging Volkswagen’s market opportunities and CATL’s expertise in battery technology.

Volkswagen, one of the world’s largest automotive giants, delivered 9.03 million vehicles globally in 2024, with 744,800 of them being battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The company aims to further advance its battery strategy and capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles.

CATL and Volkswagen have previously collaborated, with CATL receiving certification from Volkswagen’s cell testing laboratory in June 2021. This partnership further solidifies their relationship in the development of cutting-edge battery technology for the automotive industry.

Looking ahead, CATL is expected to announce a new European joint venture battery plant this year, further expanding its global footprint in the electric vehicle market. This partnership between CATL and Volkswagen underscores the growing importance of collaboration in advancing sustainable transportation solutions.
