Cerence AI, in collaboration with Microsoft, is gearing up to introduce a new AI agent aimed at enabling hands-free mobile work within vehicles. This innovative agent will operate on Cerence xUI, an agentic AI assistant platform, providing voice-first access to Microsoft 365 Copilot, OneNote, Outlook, and Teams.

The primary objective of this AI agent is to address the growing trend of mobile work and the associated risks of distracted driving. By offering natural hands-free interaction, the agent aims to reduce the need for physical and visual engagement, thereby minimizing distractions for drivers.

Integrated into the vehicle’s system, the mobile work AI agent will leverage xUI’s orchestration capabilities across various automotive-grade AI agents. It will also utilize contextual awareness to tailor its functionality based on the user’s current situation, whether they are driving, in an autonomous vehicle, or parked.

Users will be able to collaborate with the agent to compose messages, create meeting agendas, and convert notes into detailed documents using voice commands. Additionally, the agent will provide morning briefings, daily summaries, and manage calendars by drawing context from Microsoft 365 Copilot services and the vehicle’s data.

Christian Mentz, Chief Revenue Officer at Cerence AI, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and security in mobile work. He highlighted that the focus is on supporting smarter and safer work practices in an increasingly mobile world.

Cerence AI has been working closely with Microsoft since the beginning of 2024 to deliver an “automotive-grade” technology in vehicles. This collaboration has led to the development of ChatGPT via Microsoft Azure OpenAI in AI Foundry Models and an embedded small language model (SLM), CaLLM Edge, designed for managing various automotive scenarios.

In a related development, Mercedes-Benz recently expanded its partnership with Microsoft to integrate popular business tools, including Teams, into its vehicles. This move further underscores the industry’s commitment to enhancing in-car productivity and connectivity.

In conclusion, the upcoming mobile work AI agent from Cerence AI and Microsoft represents a significant step towards revolutionizing how individuals engage in mobile work within vehicles. By combining cutting-edge technology with a focus on safety and productivity, this innovative solution promises to shape the future of in-car productivity and connectivity.
