Deepal, the new energy vehicle (NEV) unit of Changan Automobile (SHE: 000625), recently introduced the S09, a large SUV option in the Chinese market. The S09 was officially unveiled on May 22, featuring only extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants. This six-seater SUV boasts dimensions of 5,205 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, 1,800 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 3,105 mm.

The Deepal S09 offers five different configurations with prices starting at RMB 239,900. This pricing is significantly lower compared to similar models in the market, like Li Auto’s Li L9 EREV starting at RMB 409,800. Following its launch, the S09 received an impressive 21,168 firm orders by midnight.

Deliveries of the S09 began immediately, with Deepal offering a limited-time discount of RMB 35,000, bringing the starting price down to RMB 204,900. The model comes with a 1.5 L range-extender engine and is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions.

The Deepal S09 is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack provided by CATL, offering a pure electric range of 220 km. It also features Huawei’s ADS SE or ADS Max driver assistance systems, with plans to upgrade to Huawei’s latest ADS 4 system in the near future.

Deepal, Changan’s NEV brand introduced in 2022, aims to compete with established players like Tesla. In addition to the S09, Deepal’s current lineup includes the SL03, S05 SUV, S07 SUV, L07 sedan, and G318 SUV. In April, Deepal delivered 20,138 vehicles, showing significant year-on-year growth. The brand targets global sales of 500,000 vehicles in 2025, with a focus on both domestic and overseas markets.

Overall, the Deepal S09 presents a compelling option for customers seeking a large SUV with advanced technology features at a competitive price point. With its impressive specifications and attractive pricing, the S09 is poised to make a mark in the rapidly evolving NEV market.
