The newly developed Mercedes-Benz eEconic is a groundbreaking all-electric tanker truck that is revolutionizing the refueling process at Airbus’ Donauwörth facility. This innovative vehicle is designed to pump sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into new Airbus Helicopters, reducing emissions and downtime in the process.

Collaboratively developed by Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks and aircraft support specialists ROHR Spezialfahrzeuge GmbH, the eEconic tanker is equipped with a 16,500-liter fueling rig specifically tailored for pumping SAF. However, the most impressive feature of this new truck is its exceptional range and efficiency.

The eEconic is equipped with three 105 kWh batteries, totaling 315 kWh, which power the electric tanker’s pump and two electric motors integrated into the e-axles. These motors generate a continuous output of 330 kW, with a peak power of up to 400 kW, providing the truck with nearly 540 horsepower. Despite its long wheelbase of 5.5 meters, the eEconic boasts a tight turning circle radius, thanks to a steered rear axle that ensures precise positioning during refueling operations.

Airbus, committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, views the use of SAF as a critical component in reaching this goal. Currently, all Airbus aircraft operate on a 50% SAF blend, with plans to transition to 100% SAF for all ICE Airbus aircraft by 2030.

The adoption of battery-electric vehicles like the eEconic in ground handling operations at airports presents an ideal solution for reducing carbon emissions in the aviation industry. As the demand for fossil fuels decreases, airports and airlines, historically significant contributors to global warming, are increasingly turning to sustainable alternatives to curb their environmental impact.

Projects like the Mercedes-Benz eEconic exemplify the potential of electric vehicles in mitigating carbon emissions, even in industries where fossil fuels have traditionally dominated. By embracing innovative solutions like the eEconic, the aviation sector can play a significant role in combating climate change and transitioning towards a more sustainable future.
