Chinese automaker Chery is set to introduce new models based on Nio’s battery swap technology in the third quarter of 2025. These models, expected to be an SUV and a sedan from Chery’s sub-brand Exeed, are part of a strategic collaboration between the two companies.
The partnership between Chery and Nio aims to leverage Nio’s expertise in battery swap technology to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) offerings of Chery. The upcoming models are anticipated to feature advanced battery swap capabilities, allowing for quick and convenient battery replacement.
Images shared on social media by automotive bloggers reveal the planned SUV and sedan models being tested at a Nio battery swap station. Nio’s vice president Shen Fei also indirectly confirmed the collaboration, indicating the authenticity of the information.
The alliance between Nio and Chery was announced in January 2024, with a focus on collaborating on battery standards, technology, and service network construction. This partnership marks a significant step towards expanding the adoption of battery swap technology in the EV industry.
Nio’s founder and CEO, William Li, mentioned during a media meetup in December 2024 that the first model from the battery swap alliance was undergoing winter testing. He highlighted that the development cycle for new battery swap-enabled models is approximately 18 months, with plans to introduce a range of models by 2027 and 2028.
The introduction of models from the battery swap alliance is expected to benefit Nio’s energy arm, Nio Power. In May 2024, Nio Power received a substantial investment of RMB 1.5 billion ($205 million) from a strategic investor in Wuhan, marking a significant milestone for the division.
As Nio continues to expand its battery swap network and develop new models with partners like Chery, the company remains at the forefront of innovation in the EV industry. The collaboration between Nio and Chery underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in driving the advancement of sustainable transportation solutions.
