Chery, a prominent automotive manufacturer, recently made a groundbreaking announcement at the Chery Global Innovation Conference on October 18. The company revealed its plans to introduce an all-solid state battery by 2026, along with the launch of the Kunpeng battery brand. The Kunpeng brand will feature three series of batteries that are capable of 6C charging, allowing for a rapid addition of 400 km range in just 5 minutes.

The development of solid-state batteries by Chery is set to achieve an impressive energy density of 400 Wh/kg this year, with a target of reaching 600 Wh/kg by 2025. The first application of these advanced batteries is slated for 2026, followed by initial batch production in 2027, promising electric vehicles a remarkable range of 1500 km.

In addition to the solid-state batteries, Chery also introduced three battery series under the Kunpeng brand – square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary, and large cylindrical ternary. One of the key highlights of these batteries is their ability to support charging at up to 6C, enabling a swift addition of 400 km range in just 5 minutes.

The square lithium iron phosphate batteries offer an energy density of 120-160 Wh/kg and cater to EVs with a range of 200-600 km, as well as PHEVs and EREVs with an all-electric range of 100-200 km. These batteries can support charging rates from 1C to 6C and are suitable for use in temperatures ranging from -30°C to 65°C.

On the other hand, the square ternary batteries are designed for EVs with a range of 600-800 km and PHEVs and EREVs with all-electric ranges of 150-300 km. With an energy density of 140-200 Wh/kg, these batteries can support charging rates from 2C to 6C and operate in temperatures from -40°C to 65°C.

Lastly, the large cylindrical series is tailored for EVs with a range of 700-1200 km and PHEVs and EREVs with all-electric ranges of 150-300 km. Like the square ternary batteries, this series also supports charging rates from 2C to 6C.

The Kunpeng series of batteries boast a lifespan of over 3,000 charging cycles and feature multi-section energy-absorbing design technology that facilitates rapid directional pressure relief within one second. Chery demonstrated the durability of its batteries by showcasing a cell with a cut corner that remained functional.

In the coming months, Chery is expected to integrate the Kunpeng series of batteries into its new energy vehicles (NEVs). The company’s NEV sales exceeded 60,000 in September out of a total of 244,534 vehicles, with Chairman Yin Tongyue aiming to reach 80,000 sales this month and 100,000 by the year’s end.

It is worth noting that the SAIC General Motors joint venture also announced its plans to utilize 6C batteries starting from 2025, signaling a growing trend towards faster and more efficient battery technologies in the automotive industry.
