The electric vehicle (EV) battery market in China saw some shifts in April, with BYD’s market share increasing while CATL’s share decreased. According to data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA), China’s overall power battery installations totaled 54.1 GWh in April, marking a 52.8 percent year-on-year increase but a 4.3 percent decrease from March.
CATL, a leading player in the EV battery market, installed 21.20 GWh of power batteries in April, maintaining its position as the market leader with a 39.44 percent share. However, this represented a decrease of 2.94 percentage points from the previous month. On the other hand, BYD’s power battery installations reached 14.17 GWh in April, securing a 26.35 percent share and marking a 1.83 percentage point increase from March.
CALB ranked third in April with a 7.02 percent market share, installing 3.78 GWh of power batteries. Gotion High-tech and Eve Energy followed with shares of 5.85 percent and 3.70 percent, respectively. The lithium ternary battery installed capacity in April accounted for 17.2 percent of the total, with a total of 9.3 GWh installed.
In terms of battery type, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries dominated the market in April, representing 82.8 percent of the total capacity with 44.8 GWh installed. CATL, CALB, and LG Energy Solution were the top three players in the ternary battery market, with shares of 72.06 percent, 11.90 percent, and 6.64 percent, respectively.
In the LFP battery market, CATL, BYD, and Gotion held the highest installed base in April, with market shares of 32.94 percent, 31.62 percent, and 6.91 percent, respectively. Overall, China produced 118.2 GWh of power and other batteries in April, a 49.0 percent year-on-year increase but a slight 0.03 percent decrease from March.
Production of ternary batteries in April reached 23.5 GWh, while LFP battery production totaled 94.6 GWh. China also exported 14.5 GWh of power batteries in April, including 8.7 GWh of ternary batteries and 5.6 GWh of LFP batteries.
