China has consistently recorded over 30 million motor vehicles in annual registrations for the past decade, reflecting the country’s robust automotive industry.

By the end of 2024, 96 cities in China had automobile populations exceeding one million units, with 45 cities surpassing two million units and 26 cities exceeding three million units. Leading the pack are six cities – Chengdu, Beijing, Chongqing, Suzhou, Shanghai, and Zhengzhou – each boasting over five million vehicles.

The total number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China reached 31.4 million by 2024, accounting for 8.9% of the entire automobile fleet. Pure electric vehicles comprised 22.09 million units, representing 70.34% of the total NEV count.

In 2024 alone, 11.25 million NEVs were registered, making up 41.83% of total new automobile registrations and witnessing a remarkable 51.49% year-on-year surge. This growth has propelled the total number of NEVs from 1.2 million units in 2019 to 11.25 million units in 2024.

By the end of 2024, China had 542 million registered motor vehicle drivers, with automobile drivers accounting for 93.46% of the total. The country issued new driving licenses to 22.26 million individuals in 2024, highlighting the increasing demand for driving privileges.
