China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market saw another milestone in November, with wholesale sales of passenger NEVs reaching an estimated 1.46 million units. This marks a significant 51 percent increase year-on-year and a 6 percent increase from the previous month, according to the latest report from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The report also highlights that in October, manufacturers with wholesale sales exceeding 10,000 passenger NEVs accounted for 93.8 percent of all NEV wholesale sales. Based on this data, the estimated sales for these carmakers in November are 1.37 million units, indicating that China’s passenger NEV wholesale sales for the month are expected to hit 1.46 million units.
This achievement marks the fifth time that China’s monthly NEV wholesale sales have surpassed the 1 million mark, showcasing the continued growth and demand for electric vehicles in the country. NEVs in China encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles, with exact figures expected to be announced later this month.
The positive trend in China’s auto market continued in November, with incentives for trade-ins playing a pivotal role in supporting the market. According to the CPCA, incentives for trade-ins have resulted in over 2 million applications for subsidies for scrapping old cars and purchasing new ones, as reported by China’s Ministry of Commerce.
China initiated trade-in subsidies at the end of April to boost auto consumption, and the subsidy amount was doubled at the end of July to further stimulate demand. Major automakers such as BYD, Geely, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Changan Automobile, and Tesla all contributed to November’s sales figures, with BYD leading the pack at 504,003 vehicles sold at wholesale.
The growth in NEV sales is a positive sign for the industry, as China continues to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles and promote sustainable transportation solutions. With record-breaking sales figures and ongoing government support, the future looks bright for the NEV market in China.
