China’s new self-driving electric scooter shows off performance

Omoway, a new player in the electric two-wheeler industry, has recently made waves with the launch of their latest creation, the Omo X. This scooter is not your average ride – it comes packed with features that rival the latest in automotive technology. Founded by former Xpeng executives, Omoway is setting a new standard in the e-scooter market.

One of the standout features of the Omo X is its “Halo Pilot” system, which allows the scooter to drive itself onto the stage. This system includes adaptive cruise control, remote summon, self-parking, automatic reversing, and self-balancing at low speeds. These are advanced autonomous functions that were previously only seen in cars, now condensed into a two-wheeler.

Underneath its sleek bodywork, Omoway’s Halo architecture offers collision warning, emergency-brake assist, blind spot monitoring, and V2V communication. The scooter’s frame is also modular, allowing it to be reconfigured to suit different riding postures, catering to a wide range of riders.

While full specifications and pricing details are yet to be revealed, early reports suggest a launch in early 2026 with a projected price of around €3,500 ($3,800). This positions the Omo X as a mid-range option, offering premium features without the luxury price tag.

However, the inclusion of bleeding-edge autonomous technology may come with trade-offs. The additional sensors, actuators, and redundant systems needed to support these smart functions could add weight and complexity to the scooter. This raises questions about affordability, maintenance, and obsolescence, especially in developing markets where simplicity and ruggedness are valued.

Despite these concerns, Omoway’s bold vision and backing from investors like Sequoia and ZhenFund demonstrate their ambition and potential for growth. With a team sourced from reputable companies like Xpeng and a focus on software updates and service networks, Omoway is poised to make a mark in the global electric scooter market.

Overall, the Omo X represents a new era of innovation in the e-scooter industry. Its blend of cutting-edge technology and practical features makes it a compelling option for riders looking for a premium yet accessible electric ride. As Omoway continues to expand its reach, it will be interesting to see how the Omo X performs in different markets around the world.
