China is making significant strides in the production of new energy vehicles (NEVs), with the year-to-date production surpassing the 10 million-vehicle mark. This milestone marks the first time annual production has crossed this threshold, solidifying China’s position as a global leader in NEV manufacturing.
According to a report by state broadcaster CCTV, China’s annual NEV production has exceeded 10 million units for the first time, making it the first country in the world to achieve this feat. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering that in 2013, the first year NEV production and sales were included in the statistical system, only 18,000 units were produced.
The growth trajectory of China’s NEV production is impressive, with annual production reaching the million level in 2018 and surpassing five million units by 2022. As of now, with a month and a half left in the year, NEV production in China is up 4.3 percent from last year’s annual production of 9.59 million units.
Experts predict that China’s NEV production for the full year of 2024 is expected to exceed 12 million units, highlighting the country’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. Dongfeng Motor’s NEV brand Voyah recently announced that its SUV model Zhiyin, also known as Courage in overseas markets, is the 10 millionth NEV produced in China.
In October alone, China’s NEV production reached 1.46 million units, representing a 47.93 percent increase year-on-year and an 11.94 percent increase from September. In the January-October period, NEV production in China totaled 9.77 million units, marking a 33.80 percent year-on-year increase.
Breaking down the production figures, battery electric vehicle (BEV) production amounted to 5.86 million units in January-October, up 14.06 percent year-on-year, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) production reached 3.91 million units, up 80.73 percent year-on-year.
The continued growth in NEV production in China reflects the country’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation options. With the industry showing no signs of slowing down, China is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the global NEV market.
