ComEd extends EV incentives in Illinois, committing a fresh $168M

ComEd, the largest energy provider in Illinois, has recently received approval from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) for its second Beneficial Electrification Plan. This new plan will see an additional $168 million investment over the next three years to support ComEd customers in Illinois who purchase or lease an electric vehicle (EV) or install a charger.

The first Beneficial Electrification (BE) Plan proposed by ComEd in 2023 was approved under the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker in 2021. This initial plan involved a $231 million investment between 2023 and 2025. Since February 2024, ComEd has utilized these funds to help Illinois residents purchase and install nearly 5,000 public and private EV charging ports and incentivize the acquisition of almost 1,000 electric fleet vehicles. As a result, EV registrations in Illinois have grown nearly four times faster than the national average.

With the approval of BE Plan 2, ComEd is committed to investing an additional $168 million in EV incentives in Illinois from 2026 to 2028. This renewed focus on EV adoption aims to assist both residential and commercial customers in transitioning to electric vehicles. The funding breakdown for the new plan includes allocations for residential EV charger installation, business and public sector EV purchase programs, site readiness for charging equipment, customer education and awareness initiatives, research and development, and a portfolio program to support overall deployment.

ComEd’s efforts also prioritize projects located in or serving low-income or Equity Investment Eligible Communities (EIECs) in Illinois, with over 70% of awarded rebates in the BE Plan going to low-income customers, businesses, and organizations in these communities.

This investment in EV incentives by ComEd is a significant step towards a cleaner energy future in Illinois. Residents can learn more about ComEd’s EV program on their website and explore potential EV tax incentives at the state level. This commitment to supporting EV adoption in Illinois reflects ComEd’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and creating a more sustainable energy system for all communities.
