Shanghai Megafactory by Tesla to Complete Construction by 2024
Shanghai (Gasgoo)- The Shanghai Megafactory by US electric vehicle maker Tesla is on track to finish construction by the end of 2024, just seven months after breaking ground in May. This rapid build speed surpasses that of its Gigafactory, as reported by local media outlets.
On May 23 of this year, Tesla and Lingang Group inked a procurement agreement for China’s first batch of ultra-large commercial energy storage system, the Tesla Megapack.
The Shanghai Megafactory is set to commence operations in the first quarter of 2025. It aims to produce 10,000 units of large-scale commercial energy storage systems (Megapack) annually, with a total storage capacity of nearly 40 GWh. These products will be distributed to global markets.

According to Tesla, each Megapack unit has a storage capacity exceeding 3.9 MWh, capable of powering 3,600 households for an hour. When over 200 units are combined, they create an energy storage plant with a capacity of 1 million kWh, enough to supply a city like San Francisco with six hours of power.
Tom Zhu, Tesla’s Senior Vice President, emphasized that the Shanghai Megafactory is Tesla’s first energy storage facility outside the United States, marking a significant investment in China over the past decade. Zhu stated, “This factory represents Tesla’s global expansion in energy storage and highlights its crucial role in the global energy transition.”
Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai, located next to the Shanghai Megafactory, has surpassed an annual production capacity of 950,000 pure electric vehicles, serving as a key export hub within Tesla’s global production network.
