The new RSD-E Tug 2513 Bu Tinah, built by Damen Shipyards, is making waves as the first fully electric tugboat to be deployed in the Middle East. Recently, it achieved a record-breaking performance at Khalifa Port during ADIPEC, the world’s largest energy conference.
Based on the efficient hull design of the standard diesel-powered RSD Tug 2513, the RSD-E Tug 2513 boasts a new, fully electric propulsion arrangement that allows for zero-emission operations. This is especially crucial in situations where oil or fuel leakage could have devastating environmental consequences.
Despite its clean operation, the Guinness World Record performance of the Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 demonstrates that transitioning to alternative energy sources does not compromise performance. The tugboat recorded an impressive average high peak bollard pull of 78.2 tonnes, showcasing its capability to handle a variety of tasks with ease.
Maritime & Shipping Cluster, AD Ports Group, Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, expressed pride in the vessel’s accomplishments, emphasizing its role in improving sustainability and cost efficiencies. The electric tug can complete a minimum of two towage operations on a single charge and can be recharged in just two hours using a marine DC fast charger.
Compared to previous models, the RSD-E Tug 2513’s performance represents a significant advancement in technology. With a nearly 50% increase in bollard weight capacity without a corresponding increase in weight or mass, it showcases the ongoing progress in electric propulsion technology.
Overall, the Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 Bu Tinah is setting a new standard for environmentally friendly marine operations in the Middle East and beyond. Its impressive performance and eco-friendly design make it a valuable asset for the Marine Services fleet and contribute to the electrification strategy of AD Ports Group.
