DFDS, a European logistics firm, has recently added 10 new electric heavy-duty trucks to its fleet in northwest England and Ireland. These trucks are part of a 100 unit order placed with Volvo earlier this year, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable transportation system.
Since 2022, DFDS has been steadily expanding its electric semi truck fleet across Europe. With operations in countries like Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, DFDS has been at the forefront of adopting zero-emission vehicles. The 100-unit order with Volvo Trucks will nearly double DFDS’ electric fleet to a total of 225 electric semis, making it the largest fleet of electric semis in Europe.
Allan Bell, Vice President and Head of DFDS Logistics in UK & Ireland, expressed excitement about bringing their expertise in operating electric trucks to the UK. The growing interest from UK companies in sustainable transportation solutions has fueled DFDS’ ambitions to scale up their low-emissions transport offerings in the future.
With 115 electric trucks already deployed, DFDS has added over 1.2 million all-electric miles to Volvo Truck’s mileage tally in the first half of 2024 alone. This achievement has resulted in saving more than 2,100 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions compared to a conventionally-powered diesel fleet.
The latest version of Volvo Trucks’ FH Electric semi offers up to 600 km (375 miles) of all-electric range, thanks to Volvo’s new compact e-axle packaging. This extended range not only accelerates the decline of diesel-powered vehicles but also presents a game-changing opportunity for companies like DFDS. However, Bell acknowledges that challenges remain, particularly in setting up charging infrastructure. DFDS remains committed to collaborating across sectors to drive the development of sustainable transportation forward.
As DFDS continues to lead the way in electrifying its fleet, the partnership with Volvo Trucks underscores a shared commitment to reducing emissions and promoting a greener future for transportation. The integration of electric heavy-duty trucks is a crucial step towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly logistics industry.
