Ford’s next electric pickup could be named the Ranchero, according to a recent patent filed by the company. The trademark application was submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office on August 5, 2025, signaling Ford’s plans for a midsize EV pickup under the iconic Ranchero nameplate.

The Ranchero name has a rich history, with Ford producing the vehicle from 1957 to 1979. Known for its unique combination of coupe styling and pickup truck utility, the Ranchero was a popular choice for consumers looking for a versatile vehicle. Its success even inspired GM to develop the Chevrolet El Camino.

With the rise of electric vehicles, Ford is looking to bring back the Ranchero in an electric form. The company has been focusing on developing breakthrough electric vehicles, with plans to introduce a new EV platform that promises cost savings and improved efficiency. The first vehicle based on this platform is expected to be the midsize EV pickup, possibly named the Ranchero.

Ford has been revitalizing classic nameplates in its European lineup, including the Explorer, Capri, and Puma, with electric versions. The Ranchero could be the next in line to receive the electric treatment.

To bring the Ranchero EV to life, Ford has opened a new EV Design Center in Long Beach, California. The company’s skunkworks team, led by former Tesla engineer Alan Clarke, has been working on the development of the midsize electric pickup, which is slated for release in 2027.

As Ford gears up to reveal its plans for the Ranchero and other breakthrough electric vehicles on August 11, consumers eagerly await more details on what the future holds for the iconic nameplate. With the growing popularity of electric vehicles, the Ranchero EV could be a hit among consumers looking for a blend of style and utility in their next vehicle purchase.
