Diesel efficiency advances in new Audi A5

The Audi A4 is undergoing a transformation, now known as the A5. This change includes the discontinuation of the A4 Saloon and Avant models, as well as the larger A5 Sportback. The new A5 Saloon, despite its name, is actually a hatchback. The S models have been replaced with the new S5 Saloon and S5 Avant, with an RS 5 on the horizon.

The A5 Avant, in its Launch Edition form, features a 1,968 cc four-cylinder diesel engine with 204 PS and 400 Nm of torque. This engine, part of the Volkswagen Group, is mated to a seven-speed S tronic transmission, propelling the car from 0 to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph.

Despite its weight of 1,835 kilos, the A5 Avant achieves impressive fuel efficiency, with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km and an average combined economy of 53.3 to 56.6 mpg. The innovative MHEV plus system allows for partially electric driving, resulting in a silent diesel engine at start-up and minimal vibration during operation.

The 48-volt electrical system and 1.7 kWh battery enable up to 18 kW/24 PS and 230 Nm of power for acceleration, as well as regenerative braking capabilities. The A5 TDI also features a coasting function for increased efficiency, with petrol and PHEV options planned for the future.

In terms of driving dynamics, the A5 handles well despite its front-wheel-drive setup, with a comfortable suspension that absorbs road imperfections. The interior is typical Audi, with premium materials, multiple screens, and a user-friendly layout. Regional variations include a lengthened A5L model for China and the exclusion of the TDI engine in the US.

Overall, the new Audi A5 2.0 TDI exemplifies the continued relevance of diesel engines in the face of growing EV adoption. With low emissions and impressive fuel economy, the A5 showcases the strengths of modern compression-ignition technology.
