Nissan is set to make a big splash in the electric car market this year with the return of the Nissan Micra as an electric vehicle. The new Micra will be twinned with the Renault 5 and will be developed with a focus on the European market. This fifth generation of the supermini will be one of three new EVs that Nissan plans to launch in Europe by the end of 2026, alongside the new Leaf and an electric Juke.
The first official images of the production version of the Micra have been released, showcasing design cues from the motorsport-themed 20-23 concept shown in 2023. The design of the car was led at Nissan’s European design center in London, but it will be manufactured by Alliance partner Renault in Douai, France. The Micra will share its CMF-BEV platform and technical underpinnings with the Renault 5, and it contains design cues from the K12-generation Micra of 2002, particularly through its round front and rear lights.
Nissan’s global design chief, Alfonso Albaisa, revealed that the new Micra was developed alongside the Renault 5 from the start, making it the closest collaboration he has had with the French firm on a design project. The Micra has been described as having cute design elements, such as round, puppy-dog headlights, while the Renault 5 has a more angular and aggressive look.
Overall, the Micra has a larger bonnet and body compared to the Renault 5, with engineers having to carefully rework the front of the car to accommodate all the necessary safety features. The collaboration between Nissan and Renault has resulted in a unique and stylish electric car that is sure to turn heads on European roads.
