Fiat is gearing up to launch a new SUV that is set to rival the Dacia Bigster in 2027. This upcoming model is part of Fiat’s plan to introduce two C-segment vehicles within the next two years, including a sleek hatchback. The inspiration for these new models came from the Panda-inspired SUV and Fastback concepts that were unveiled last year.
Both of these new vehicles will be compact, measuring a maximum of 4.5 meters in length, and will be built on the Stellantis Smart Car platform, which also underpins the smaller Grande Panda. This platform will allow Fiat to offer electric and hybrid powertrain options for these new models.
Although the new SUV will be part of the Panda design family, Fiat has hinted that it may not carry the Panda name. Fiat Europe boss Gaetano Thorel acknowledged the challenge of expanding beyond the city car market, but pointed out that Fiat has a history with family movers, citing the cult-classic Multipla MPV as an example.
The Multipla, introduced in 1998, was a compact MPV with innovative seating configurations and space-saving features. While the styling divided opinions and it wasn’t a commercial success, the Multipla was lauded for its design and forward-thinking approach.
The new Fiat SUV will have a more traditional appearance compared to the Multipla but may follow its lead in maximizing interior space within a small footprint. For reference, the Citroën C3 Aircross, which shares the same platform as the Grande Panda, offers seating for seven passengers.
Fiat’s upcoming SUV is expected to bring a fresh take on the C-segment market, drawing inspiration from both the brand’s heritage and modern design trends. With a focus on practicality and innovation, Fiat aims to appeal to a wider audience with its new lineup of vehicles.
