Ford has issued a recall for its Super Duty diesel pickup trucks, specifically targeting models that have been sitting idle during the pandemic. The recall affects a total of 295,449 heavy duty trucks equipped with Ford’s 6.7-liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel engine, including the 2020-2022 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-600 Super Duty models, as well as the 2021-2022 Ford F-650 and F-750 truck platforms used in various heavy duty applications.
The issue at hand is a failed fuel pump, which may have been caused by aged biodiesel fuel deposits that accumulated while the trucks were not in use. This can lead to a loss of engine power, making it difficult for the trucks to perform their intended work functions. Signs of a faulty fuel pump include longer crank times on start up, a check engine light, increased noise, and reduced engine power.
Ford has attributed a total of 3,070 warranty reports and 498 field reports to this diesel fuel pump issue since October 2019 through November 2024. In response, the automaker has devised a solution in the form of a software reflash of the powertrain control module, which will enhance pump cooling to prevent the formation of aged biodiesel deposits. Owners will be notified by mail to bring their trucks into a Ford or Lincoln service center for the necessary repairs. Those who have already paid for a fuel pump fix will be reimbursed.
