Geely has officially teased its upcoming gasoline-powered light off-road SUV named the Cowboy, which is built based on the Geely Icon. The Geely Cowboy was previously declared by the Chinese MIIT. It is still uncertain whether a plug-in hybrid variant will be available in the future.

The Geely Cowboy measures 4442/1860/1770 mm, with a wheelbase of 2640 mm. The exterior design of the Geely Cowboy features a two-color body with a floating roof design. An oversized luggage/equipment rack is added to the roof, providing a cargo area of 1.3m² and a maximum load of 50 kg. The words “Born Free” are engraved on the luggage rack, adding a touch of adventure to the vehicle. Optional spotlights can be installed in front of the luggage rack, and the D-pillar comes with an external container, enhancing the off-road characteristics of the Geely Cowboy.

Moving to the rear, there is a container with an upper opening design that supports drainage. The Geely Cowboy is equipped with off-road AT tires with red sports calipers for a sporty look.

As of now, Geely has not released any information regarding the interior design and configuration of the Cowboy. The powertrain will feature a 1.5T turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 133 kW (178 hp) and a peak torque of 290 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission, similar to the Geely Icon currently on sale.

The rise of off-road vehicles in China is evident, with the outdoor trend gaining popularity. New players are entering the market, offering a range of options from high-end to entry-level, new energy to gasoline-powered, and hardcore to light off-road vehicles. Industry insiders predict that the market sales of light off-road vehicles will surpass 2 million units in the next one to two years, gradually replacing urban SUVs.

BAIC has identified four main consumer groups for off-road vehicles in China. These include professional users for military, forests, and mine applications, off-road hardcore enthusiasts, off-road regular enthusiasts, and off-road aspirants who use off-road vehicles for transportation purposes.

Overall, the Geely Cowboy is set to make a mark in the off-road vehicle segment in China, catering to the growing demand for adventure-ready vehicles in the market.
