Genesis may drop its most affordable model for SUVs and EVs

The Genesis G70 sedan, known for being the most affordable model in the Genesis lineup, is reportedly on the chopping block. According to a recent report by Automotive News, Genesis is planning to discontinue the G70 after the 2027 model year. This decision comes as Genesis shifts its focus towards SUVs and electric vehicles, aligning with the changing preferences of consumers in the luxury car market.

While the G70 has been a popular choice for buyers with a starting price of $42,500, industry analysts believe that the sedan is not likely to see a second generation. This move is not limited to the US market, as Genesis is expected to phase out the G70 globally.

Although Genesis has not officially confirmed the discontinuation of the G70, a company spokesperson mentioned that there are currently no plans to do so. However, the spokesperson’s statement leaves room for interpretation with the phrase “at this time.”

The G70 received a significant refresh for the 2022 model year, showcasing updates to its exterior design and interior features. Despite these enhancements, it seems that the sedan may not have a place in Genesis’ future lineup as the brand pivots towards SUVs and electric vehicles.

Earlier this year, Genesis also discontinued the Electrified G80 electric sedan in the US market, leaving only the GV60 and Electrified GV70 as the brand’s electric offerings. This strategic shift reflects Genesis’ commitment to adapt to evolving consumer needs and market conditions.

If the G70 sedan is indeed phased out, the GV70 SUV will become Genesis’ most affordable model, with a starting price of $47,985. Additionally, Genesis is gearing up to introduce the GV90, an ultra-luxury electric SUV that will serve as the brand’s flagship model. The GV90 is expected to debut next year and will compete with luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

In conclusion, Genesis’ decision to retire the G70 sedan underscores the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the luxury car market. As the automotive industry continues to evolve towards electric mobility and SUVs, Genesis is positioning itself for success with a lineup that reflects the changing preferences of consumers.
