GM takes over as the ‘#1 EV seller’ in Canada

General Motors (GM) has recently claimed the title of the “#1 EV seller” in Canada after experiencing a significant surge in electric vehicle sales during the first quarter of 2025. With a diverse lineup of 13 all-electric vehicles, GM managed to surpass Tesla in terms of EV sales in Canada.

The standout performer for GM was the Chevy Equinox EV, which sold an impressive 1,892 units, followed closely by the Silverado EV with 894 units. Cadillac also made a strong showing with its new entry-level OPTIQ, selling 615 units and almost matching the sales of its first EV, the LYRIQ. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV also experienced increased demand, with sales up by 232% and 88% respectively.

In total, GM sold a remarkable 5,750 EVs in Q1, outperforming Tesla to claim the top spot in EV sales in Canada. This achievement was highlighted by GM Canada on social media, proudly announcing their status as the country’s #1 EV seller. The decline in Tesla’s sales in Quebec during this period can be attributed to the temporary pause in federal EV incentives by the Quebec government and the suspension of Canada’s iZEV rebate program in January.

Despite the overall success in EV sales, GM experienced a decrease in the number of Equinox and Blazer EVs registered in Quebec compared to the previous quarter. However, the company remains optimistic about the future, with plans to expand their lineup further by introducing new models like the Cadillac Escalade IQL, Lyriq-V, and Visiq. Additionally, GM is gearing up for the launch of the next-gen Chevy Bolt EV, set to hit the market by the end of the year.

GM’s success in Canada reflects their growing momentum in the electric vehicle market, with the company positioning itself as a key player in the industry. With a focus on offering a diverse range of EVs across various segments, GM has solidified its position as a major contender in the EV space. As they continue to innovate and introduce new models, GM is poised to further solidify its position as a leader in the electric vehicle market.

Overall, GM’s achievements in Canada and the US demonstrate their commitment to sustainable mobility and their ability to adapt to the evolving landscape of the automotive industry. With a strong lineup of electric vehicles and a focus on innovation, GM is well-positioned to continue driving the transition towards a more sustainable future.
