Gotion Power Morocco, a subsidiary of the Sino-European electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer Gotion High Tech, is gearing up to start construction of its gigafactory in Morocco. This initiative comes after the company signed an investment agreement with the Moroccan government in June 2024. The gigafactory, set to be located near Kenitra in northwestern Morocco, is poised to become the first of its kind in Africa with a total investment of $6.5 billion.
According to Reuters, Khalid Qalam, the head of Gotion’s Moroccan operations, revealed that the groundwork for the site has been finalized. The facility is projected to commence production in the third quarter of 2026. The initial phase of the project will involve an investment of $1.3 billion and will have a production capacity of 20GW. Additionally, there are plans to expand the capacity to 40GW in a second phase, although a timeline for this expansion has not been disclosed.
In addition to manufacturing batteries, the gigafactory will also produce cathodes and anodes. The primary aim is to export the majority of the production to Europe, with Qalam mentioning that the company has already received orders from several European car manufacturers. SK IE Technology Company (SKIET), a battery materials manufacturer under South Korea’s SK Group, has signed a preliminary agreement to supply materials to Gotion High Tech Company. The agreement entails supplying separator materials for Gotion’s EV battery and ESS plants in the US and Europe.
As the construction of the gigafactory progresses, it is expected to bring significant advancements to the EV industry in Morocco and the broader African continent.
