Honda Civic Type R bows out with new Ultimate Edition

The Honda Civic Type R is saying goodbye to the UK and Europe, as it is being pulled from sale in 2026. This decision comes as a result of the ever-changing automotive industry landscape and the need to comply with stricter European legislation. The Type R, known for its sporty performance and iconic design, will be commemorated with a special edition marking its 28-year production history.

While Honda has not explicitly stated the exact reason for discontinuing the Type R, it is likely due to the EU’s General Safety Regulations 2 (GSR2). This legislation mandates the inclusion of safety features such as driver attention monitors and speed limit warning systems, which the Type R may not meet. The GSR2 also includes a provision that allows non-compliant cars with low sales volumes to remain on the market until July 2026, coinciding with the Type R’s departure from Europe.

The impact of the GSR2 is not limited to Honda, as other models like the Toyota GR86 and the Alpine A110 are also facing early discontinuation due to the regulations. Additionally, pulling the Type R from sale will help Honda meet Europe’s stringent fleet CO2 emissions standards, as the high-performance model produces significantly more CO2 compared to a regular Civic.

To celebrate the legacy of the Civic Type R, Honda will release the Ultimate Edition. This special edition will feature the iconic Championship White paint with red racing stripes, paying homage to the model’s racing heritage. Inside, the Ultimate Edition will boast carbon fiber accents on the door skidplates and center console, adding a touch of luxury to the sporty interior.

As the Honda Civic Type R bids farewell to Europe, car enthusiasts will fondly remember its legacy and contribution to the automotive world. The Ultimate Edition serves as a fitting tribute to a beloved model that has left a lasting impact on the hearts of drivers everywhere.
