General Motors Europe’s design team, led by design chief Mark Thomson, has faced its fair share of challenges but has ultimately come out on top. Thomson recalls a particularly tough moment in Thailand when he had to handle a late-night Teams call with a group of angry builders discussing drains and electrical supply. However, the team persevered and ultimately found success.

The standout achievement of GM Design Europe is their concept for a Corvette C10, a model beyond the upcoming C9. This concept, commissioned by GM’s global design chief Michael Simcoe, has been well-received and showcases the team’s talent and creativity. Thomson emphasizes the importance of respecting the Corvette’s rich history while also infusing fresh and innovative design elements.

One of the main challenges faced by the European design team is striking the right balance between American heritage and European sensibilities. Thomson explains the need to capture the essence of American design – optimism, confidence, and entertainment – while also offering a unique perspective. The team aims to bring a fresh outlook to American cars without being confined by traditional expectations.

Thomson’s extensive experience in advanced design, gained from his time at VW and Ford, gives him the confidence to push boundaries and present bold designs that may not go into production but will certainly influence future models. He highlights the value of approaching designs with a sense of naivety, allowing for fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.

In the world of automotive design, it is crucial to embrace new challenges and constantly evolve. GM Design Europe’s commitment to reimagining American cars through a European lens demonstrates their dedication to pushing boundaries and creating groundbreaking designs. With Thomson at the helm, the team is poised to continue making waves in the automotive design industry.
