Generative AI technology is revolutionizing the automotive industry, particularly in the realm of voice assistants integrated into vehicles. One of the pioneers in this field is Volkswagen, which has partnered with technology company Cerence to bring ChatGPT to its vehicles. ChatGPT enhances the customer experience by providing more natural and enriching conversations, as well as improving overall functionality.

Volkswagen’s ChatGPT-powered voice assistant, known as the VW IDA, offers a wide range of features that go beyond traditional voice assistants. Users can communicate with their vehicle using natural language and receive a plethora of information. The voice assistant is activated through voice commands or by touching a specific part of the steering wheel, allowing drivers to access information hands-free.

With ChatGPT integrated into the VW IDA, drivers can ask a wide range of questions and receive credible and relevant responses. The large language model used by ChatGPT ensures that the voice assistant can handle nearly every query imaginable. This technology is particularly useful for functions like temperature control, providing tourist information, or general knowledge.

Cerence Chat Pro, the technology powering ChatGPT in Volkswagen vehicles, is available in multiple languages across various Volkswagen Group brands. This includes Volkswagen, Cupra, Seat, and Skoda, offering a seamless and interactive experience for users. The technology is currently live in English (US and UK), German, Spanish, and Czech, catering to a diverse range of customers.

Volkswagen’s commitment to democratizing technology is evident in its adoption of ChatGPT. By making advanced AI technology accessible to a wide range of customers through its high-volume production, Volkswagen is setting a new standard for AI integration in the automotive industry. With ChatGPT and the VW IDA, Volkswagen is paving the way for a more interactive and efficient driving experience for its customers.

By seamlessly integrating ChatGPT into the backend of our voice assistant, Volkswagen is taking a significant step towards offering drivers the opportunity to use artificial intelligence on a daily basis. This move highlights the innovative nature of Volkswagen’s products and showcases their commitment to enhancing the driving experience for their customers.

Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, expressed his pride in the partnership with Volkswagen Group and the initial roll out of Cerence Chat Pro to drivers. This collaboration aims to provide immediate value to drivers by leveraging generative AI while on the go. The new capabilities introduced by Cerence Chat Pro make the IDA voice assistant more knowledgeable, capable, and valuable, ultimately leading to a safer and more enjoyable journey for drivers.

The roll-out of Cerence Chat Pro by Volkswagen will continue globally, with plans to introduce new features and improvements in the US later this year and through early 2025. This ongoing development reflects Volkswagen’s commitment to enhancing the driving experience through the integration of cutting-edge technology.

Volkswagen’s focus on AI extends beyond the integration of ChatGPT into their voice assistant. Earlier this year, the company established an ‘AI Lab’ as a globally networked competence centre and incubator. This lab is designed to identify new product ideas connected with AI and collaborate with tech companies to maximize AI-based opportunities in all areas of innovation and process.

Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, emphasized the importance of collaboration with technology companies in driving innovation and simplifying cooperation within the organization. The company’s objective is to rapidly develop digital prototypes and transfer them to group brands for implementation, ultimately delivering added value to customers beyond their cars.

In addition to the integration of AI into vehicles, Volkswagen sees significant potential in high-performance speech recognition, services connecting users’ digital environments with the vehicle, and extended vehicle functions. These developments aim to enhance the overall product experience and offer customers added value in line with their digital lifestyles.

AI has already transformed various aspects of the automotive industry, boosting efficiency, innovation, and product quality. The technology continues to revolutionize the industry, with machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing playing integral roles in the development of autonomous vehicles.

AI applications in automotive extend beyond vehicle development to the retail side of the industry. Chatbots and virtual sales assistants enable dealerships to handle customer queries efficiently and provide customers with tailored suggestions, up-to-date vehicle knowledge, and financing options.

Machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing are key components in the development of autonomous vehicles. These technologies enable AVs to recognize patterns in sensor data, process visual information, and understand commands, ultimately enhancing the user experience and safety of autonomous vehicles.
