GAC Group’s GH project, a collaboration with Huawei, is gearing up to launch its first model in 2026, as reported by local media outlet Cailian on February 18. The project represents a new approach within Huawei’s automotive business unit, signaling a fresh direction for the tech giant in the coming year.
Initially, Huawei and GAC engaged in discussions regarding this new collaboration approach, but faced challenges in reaching an agreement. However, they have now rekindled their partnership, with plans to introduce a luxury smart new energy vehicle (NEV) in the RMB 300,000 class.
This partnership falls under Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) strategy, which focuses on creating new brands in collaboration with local automakers. The aim is to provide consumers with innovative and intelligent mobility experiences through cutting-edge technologies.
GAC’s electric vehicle subsidiary, Aion, had previously announced a partnership with Huawei to develop a premium brand, with an SUV codenamed AH8 set for launch in 2023. However, plans shifted, and Aion decided to develop the AH8 independently.
In November 2024, GAC and Huawei signed a deepening cooperation agreement to establish a new brand for high-end smart NEVs. This led to the formation of a project company named “GH” with a registered capital of RMB 1.5 billion, dedicated to defining and designing vehicles in collaboration with Huawei.
The success of Aito, a brand created under the HIMA strategy, has encouraged other automakers to explore similar partnerships with Huawei. The alliance has already spawned brands like Luxeed, Stelato, and Maextro, with a new brand in the works with SAIC Motor.
The upcoming GH project’s first model is expected to be a game-changer in the luxury smart NEV segment, offering consumers a forward-looking and intelligent driving experience. With Huawei’s expertise in smart car solutions and GAC’s manufacturing prowess, the collaboration is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry.
As the competition in the electric vehicle market heats up, partnerships like the GH project between GAC and Huawei are becoming increasingly vital for legacy automakers to stay ahead of the curve. By leveraging each other’s strengths and expertise, these collaborations have the potential to revolutionize the way we perceive and interact with automobiles.
