Hyundai and GM combine forces for lower-priced vehicles, EVs

Hyundai and GM have joined forces to develop a range of new vehicles, including a compact SUV, car, pickup truck, midsize pickup, and an electric van. This collaboration comes as the two auto giants aim to compete with lower-priced cars from Chinese brands like BYD in the global market.

GM and Hyundai, which collectively produce more vehicles than any other automaker worldwide, announced their partnership last September. The new co-developed vehicles will share platforms and technologies, but will feature distinct designs to differentiate the brands.

GM is taking the lead on developing a midsize pickup truck platform, while Hyundai is focusing on the SUV and electric van. Production of the four compact models, set to launch in Central and South America, is already underway and will begin rolling out in 2028. These models include a smaller SUV, a car, a pickup truck, and a midsize pickup.

The commercial electric van, which will be produced in the US starting in 2028, will be a smaller version of Chevrolet’s BrightDrop vans. In addition to vehicle development, GM and Hyundai are also collaborating on logistics and sourcing materials to reduce costs, streamline manufacturing, and accelerate the launch of new models.

Once production is fully scaled, the automakers anticipate selling over 800,000 co-developed vehicles annually. GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that the goal is to leverage the strengths of both companies to deliver competitive vehicles to customers more efficiently.

This collaboration follows GM’s successful partnership with Honda, which has seen the Honda Prologue and Chevy Equinox EV outselling many other electric vehicles in the US market. As GM and Hyundai strive to compete with Chinese brands offering lower-cost vehicles, this partnership is seen as a strategic move to strengthen their global presence.

It remains to be seen whether Hyundai will utilize its dedicated E-GMP.S platform, used for Kia’s PBV electric vans, for its US models. Regardless, the partnership between GM and Hyundai is expected to enhance both brands’ competitiveness on a global scale. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration.

If you were to choose a GM and Hyundai co-developed vehicle, what would it be? An SUV, pickup truck, or an EV? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
