Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is making significant strides in expanding its research and development (R&D) facilities in Europe. The company is focusing on sustainable mobility and future-oriented expansion, with recent developments including the completion of its test center extension at Nürburgring and the upcoming opening of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center’s (HMETC) new Square Campus in March 2025.
HMG has been actively involved in developing its presence at Nürburgring over the past decade, starting with durability testing in 2011 and establishing a full-fledged test center in 2013. The latest expansion at Nürburgring adds 834 square meters of testing facilities, including new workshop areas, specialized laboratories, and high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) charging capabilities.
Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, emphasized the importance of this expansion in securing the infrastructure for the future of mobility. He highlighted the company’s confidence in the growth of the EV sector and its commitment to driving sustainable innovation. The enhanced facilities at Nürburgring will support the integration of N-performance with the EV strategy and the refinement of conventional engine technologies.
The expansion continues with the upcoming opening of the new ‘Square Campus’ at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center. This 25,000-square-meter facility in the Rhine-Main region will house HMG’s largest four-wheel noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) dynamometer, as well as advanced chassis and powertrain dynos. These facilities will enable the simulation and evaluation of vehicle performance under various conditions without the need for on-road testing.
The focus of the Square Campus will be on improving EVs, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment, and electrification technologies. Johnson reiterated the company’s progressive mindset and commitment to pushing limits for greater success. The investment in the Rhine-Main region reflects confidence in the engineering expertise and innovative strength of the area, providing a hub for creative collaboration and shaping a more dynamic, connected future for the European automotive landscape.
The new Square Campus exemplifies HMG’s commitment to sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly materials, photovoltaic panels, and heat pump systems. The facility will offer a modern working environment with hybrid workspaces, a rooftop garden, and smart working systems to foster collaboration and creativity.
Overall, Hyundai Motor Group’s expansion of its R&D facilities in Europe underscores its dedication to innovation, sustainability, and pushing the boundaries of automotive technology. The company’s investments in cutting-edge facilities and technologies set the stage for a more dynamic and connected future in the European automotive industry.
