Hyundai Motor America has announced a recall of 145,235 electric vehicles from its Ioniq electric and Genesis luxury brands due to a potential issue with the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). This recall includes models such as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, and Genesis Electrified.
The problem with the ICCU is that it can suffer heat damage, leading to a failure to charge the 12-volt battery that powers low-voltage auxiliary equipment in the vehicles. This can result in an open fuse and the detection of a fault, causing the vehicle to enter a “fail-safe” mode where drive power gradually decreases until there is none left.
This issue has been under investigation by Hyundai since October 2022 and has resulted in an earlier recall in March 2024, affecting a total of 99,055 Hyundai and Genesis EVs. The current recall expands and replaces the earlier one, with all affected models needing to be taken to a Hyundai/Genesis dealer service center for inspection, possible replacement of the control unit, and a software update.
Drivers may notice audible and visual warnings in the instrument cluster before the vehicle enters fail-safe mode. If the warnings are ignored and the vehicle continues to be driven, all drive power will eventually be cut off. While Hyundai has not reported any injuries or crashes related to this issue, they have acknowledged 675 incidents of the event occurring.
Kia has also recalled the Kia EV6 for the same problem earlier this year. Hyundai and Genesis owners will receive notification by mail starting from January 15, 2025, and are advised to bring their EVs to a dealer for the necessary repairs. The repairs are covered by warranty, and reimbursement may be provided for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred.
