Hyundai and Kia have broken records in 2024 by shipping nearly 708,000 electrified cars from Korea. The IONIQ 5, Hyundai’s electric SUV, played a significant role in this achievement, with over 68,000 exports making it the company’s top-selling EV overseas.
Since its launch in February 2021, the IONIQ 5 has been winning over buyers worldwide with its bold design inspired by Hyundai’s first production car, the Pony. The electric SUV boasts a long driving range of over 300 miles, fast charging capabilities under 20 minutes, and a tech-loaded interior, making it a popular choice even with the influx of new electric cars in the market.
In the US, the IONIQ 5 was the fifth best-selling EV in 2024, trailing behind only Tesla’s Model Y, Model 3, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Globally, the IONIQ 5 helped Hyundai set a new eco-friendly export record in 2024. With 68,227 exports, it ranked third among Hyundai’s top-selling electrified models outside of its home market, following the Tucson Hybrid and Kona Hybrid. Kia also saw success with over 69,500 Niro Hybrids and almost 42,500 EV6s sold overseas.
The surge in eco-friendly exports for Hyundai and Kia is evident, with a nearly 160% increase since 2020. Their share of exports has almost doubled from 17% to 32%, with the US, Canada, and Mexico accounting for over 55% of total exports, followed by Europe at 18.7%.
Both Hyundai and Kia are ramping up EV production in Korea and overseas. Kia’s Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, where the low-cost EV3 is manufactured, opened in October 2024. Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia also began production the same month, with the 2025 IONIQ 5 refresh being the first model to roll off the assembly line. The upgraded IONIQ 5 now offers more driving range, improved style, and an NACS port for charging at Tesla Superchargers.
Looking ahead, Hyundai’s first three-row electric SUV, the IONIQ 9, will be built alongside the IONIQ 5. With Hyundai and Kia EVs now qualifying for the $7,500 EV tax credit for the first time, the Korean automakers are optimistic about another successful year in 2025.
