Hyundai recalls 226,000 Santa Fe, Elantra to replace rearview camera

Hyundai has issued a recall for 226,118 Santa Fe crossover SUVs and Elantra compact sedans due to a potential issue with the rearview camera image failing to display properly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed this information on Monday, stating that the rearview camera’s circuit board may have insufficient solder joints that connect the electrical and mechanical components. Over time, these connections could deteriorate, leading to a complete failure of the camera. This poses a risk of accidents while reversing, as drivers may not be able to see obstacles or pedestrians behind them.

The recall affects all versions of the 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe midsize crossover and all versions of the 2021-2022 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan. While Hyundai has acknowledged that the display could turn black or white, they have not reported any crashes or injuries related to this issue. It is worth noting that Hyundai is not the only automaker facing such recalls, as several major manufacturers have had to address faulty rearview camera images in recent years.

The rearview camera became mandatory in all new cars built in 2018 and beyond, in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. As automakers continue to integrate these cameras into more advanced touchscreen functions, there is a higher risk of technical malfunctions. Failure to comply with safety standards can result in significant penalties, as demonstrated by the $165 million fine imposed on Ford for failing to address a rearview camera recall promptly.

For owners of the affected Santa Fe and Elantra models, notifications will be sent out by mail starting on January 19, 2025. The rearview camera will be replaced by the dealer at no cost to the customer, and reimbursement may be provided to those who have already paid for the fix before the recall. For more information, owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 or visit Hyundai’s recall hub online.

It is crucial for vehicle owners to stay informed about recalls and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road. Hyundai’s proactive approach to addressing this issue demonstrates their commitment to customer safety and satisfaction.
