South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor’s joint venture in China, Beijing Hyundai, has unveiled its first all-electric SUV model, the Elexio. The debut of the Elexio marks Hyundai’s attempt to make a comeback in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market.

The Elexio was showcased at a brand strategy communication session held by Beijing Hyundai in Shanghai. The joint venture aims to establish itself as a key player in the new energy vehicle (NEV) space by introducing a range of electric vehicle models, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).

Beijing Hyundai plans to offer a diverse lineup of sedans, SUVs, and multi-purpose vehicles to cater to the varying mobility needs of consumers. While specific details about the Elexio’s specifications have not been released yet, the company is optimistic about the model’s potential to capture the attention of the Chinese market.

The launch of the Elexio comes at a crucial time for joint venture automakers in China, as many are looking to reassert their presence in the EV segment. Dongfeng Nissan, a Chinese joint venture of Nissan Motor, recently introduced the N7 all-electric sedan at competitive price points, signaling a renewed focus on electric vehicles by joint ventures in China.

Several joint venture automakers showcased their latest EV models at the 2025 Shanghai auto show, indicating a resurgence in their efforts to compete in China’s EV market. With the EV sector witnessing rapid growth and intense competition, joint ventures are stepping up their game to gain a foothold in this lucrative market.

The debut of the Elexio underscores Beijing Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry. As the company embarks on its journey in the NEV space, it is poised to contribute to the electrification of transportation and drive the adoption of eco-friendly mobility solutions in China.

Overall, the introduction of the Elexio by Beijing Hyundai signifies a significant milestone in the company’s quest to establish itself as a leading player in the EV market. With a focus on cutting-edge technology and customer-centric offerings, Beijing Hyundai is set to make a mark in China’s evolving automotive landscape.
