A Sneak Peek at the Future of Skoda: The Next-Generation Octavia Estate
A new concept car from Skoda is set to shake things up and spark controversial discussions in the automotive world as the brand enters a new era of design. Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer has teased that this upcoming concept will be a significant step forward in the brand’s design language while still staying true to its Skoda roots.
This innovative estate concept, scheduled to be unveiled at the Munich motor show in September, will be built on Volkswagen Group’s cutting-edge SSP platform. This platform is specifically designed for the next wave of electric vehicles, following the current MEB architecture.
Zellmer explained that Skoda opted to hold off on launching an electric Octavia on the current MEB platform due to its limitations for lower saloon and estate models. The new SSP platform will also offer advanced automated driving features that are essential for the next-generation Octavia.
While pushing boundaries with its design, the new Octavia concept will still embody the essence of Skoda, marking a progression for the brand without straying from its core identity. This move is not about veering off into the unknown but rather about evolving while staying true to its heritage.
Although a production version of this concept is not expected until the end of the decade, Zellmer hinted at the possibility of offering the electric estate alongside an updated combustion-engined model to cater to a wider range of customers and powertrain preferences.
Additionally, Skoda is gearing up to reintroduce a plug-in hybrid version of the Octavia, following a resurgence in demand for such models. The brand is also committed to keeping its Fabia, Scala, and Kamiq models on the market beyond 2030, contrary to previous plans of phasing them out.
Zellmer emphasized the importance of cost competitiveness in the electric vehicle market, with a focus on driving down costs to achieve price parity with combustion engine vehicles. Skoda’s upcoming electric lineup includes a flagship seven-seat model, currently known as the “Space BEV,” derived from the spacious interior it offers.
As Skoda embraces a new design direction and electrification strategy, the automotive world eagerly anticipates the unveiling of the next-generation Octavia estate concept, set to make a bold statement at the forefront of innovation and style.
