Renault’s Emblème Concept: A Sustainable Laboratory on Wheels

Renault is revolutionizing the automotive industry with its Emblème concept, which is not just a futuristic design but a “laboratory on wheels for low-carbon mobility.”

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October last year, the Emblème concept boasts a carbon footprint that is 90% lower than a 2019 petrol Captur, making it a game-changer in the quest for sustainable transportation.

Measuring 4.8 meters long, this estate vehicle is designed as a dual-energy electric vehicle, featuring both a battery and a range-extending hydrogen fuel cell system to ensure continuous power supply.

Going beyond mere concept, the Emblème serves as a comprehensive study on how to achieve incremental reductions in carbon footprint by optimizing aerodynamics, weight, and materials used in every aspect of the vehicle.

Through collaboration with over 20 partners, Renault and its EV division, Ampere, have managed to reduce the carbon footprint of parts production by an impressive 70%, focusing on key components such as the battery, steel, aluminium, polymers, electronic components, tires, and the hydrogen fuel cell system.

Noteworthy innovations include the OPmobility hydrogen fuel tank made from carbon fiber, utilizing low-carbon energy in the manufacturing process, and the Verkor high-voltage battery with a 72% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional batteries.

Additionally, advanced materials like advanced high-strength steels and recycled aluminium have been incorporated into the construction of the Emblème, further enhancing its sustainability credentials. The use of natural materials like linen and pineapple in the interior not only adds a touch of luxury but also acts as carbon sinks by absorbing CO2 during growth.

Renault’s commitment to sustainability extends to the Emblème’s battery, which is designed for high-speed charging capabilities, ensuring convenience for users while minimizing environmental impact.

With its innovative approach to low-carbon mobility, the Emblème concept is paving the way for a greener future in the automotive industry, showcasing the endless possibilities of sustainable transportation.
