Jeep’s new Recon is shaping up to be the Wrangler of EVs

Jeep is gearing up to revolutionize the world of off-roading with its highly anticipated electric off-roader, the Recon. Set to be the brand’s first true off-road electric SUV, the Recon is shaping up to be the Wrangler of EVs, as Jeep has been teasing.

The Recon, which was first unveiled as a concept in 2022, takes inspiration from the legendary Wrangler, boasting features like removable doors and windows. However, a recent patent discovery has hinted at even more exciting features that the Recon will borrow from its iconic sibling.

The patent, filed with the USPTO, is for a three-speed gearbox specifically designed for electric vehicles. This innovative gearbox features two planetary gear sets and three clutches, allowing for three distinct gear ratios. The first gear is tailored for off-road adventures, providing more torque for activities like rock crawling, towing, and driving on challenging terrains like sand, snow, and mud. The second gear is ideal for everyday driving, while the third gear focuses on enhancing efficiency on highways.

While most electric vehicles currently utilize a single-speed gearbox, Jeep’s decision to incorporate a three-speed gearbox in the Recon sets it apart in terms of both performance and capability. This innovative technology is expected to elevate the Recon’s off-road prowess to new heights.

Based on the STLA Large platform, the same platform that underpins Jeep’s first electric vehicle, the Wagoneer S, the Recon is projected to offer a driving range of approximately 300 miles. The interior of the Recon has also been teased, featuring Jeep’s signature Selec-Terrain system with various modes like Rock and Mud.

With an estimated starting price of $60,000, the Recon is expected to come in three trims – Willys, Overland, and a Moab edition. Higher-end trims like the Moab are anticipated to cost upwards of $80,000. The production model is set to debut later this year, and more details regarding pricing and specifications will be unveiled as the launch date approaches.

Jeep enthusiasts and off-road aficionados alike are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Recon, which promises to be a game-changer in the world of electric off-roading. Stay tuned for more updates on this electrifying new addition to Jeep’s lineup.
