John Deere wowed attendees at CES 2025 with their new autonomous machines and technology, with a battery electric lawn mowing robot stealing the show. Named Howard, this robot boasts a 21.4 kWh battery pack powering electric motors spread across a 60-inch cutting deck. What sets Howard apart is its ability to mimic the mowing pattern of its human operator, allowing landscapers to focus on other tasks while Howard takes care of the mowing.

The commercial autonomous mower from John Deere utilizes camera technology to provide a 360-degree view of its surroundings, enabling it to navigate obstacles and avoid potential hazards. Tim Lewis, lead engineer on the project, highlighted the high turnover rate in the industry and the need for autonomy to assist in effectively completing landscaping tasks. With John Deere’s expertise in the turf business for over 60 years, the autonomous mower is a natural progression in meeting the needs of landscapers.

The CES exhibit showcased Howard alongside other autonomous machines, demonstrating John Deere’s commitment to innovation in the agricultural and landscaping industries. The compact size of the autonomous mower makes it a versatile tool for landscapers looking to streamline their operations. With the ability to navigate complex landscapes and adjust mowing patterns on the fly, Howard represents a leap forward in automation technology for the landscaping industry.

Overall, John Deere’s autonomous mower is a testament to the company’s understanding of its customers’ needs and its dedication to providing innovative solutions. As the industry continues to evolve, autonomous technology like Howard will play a crucial role in improving efficiency and productivity for landscapers.
