Opinion: Kia America COO Steve Center on the UK’s ZEV Mandate

When asked about the UK’s ZEV mandate, Kia America COO Steve Center had some strong words to say. “God help you,” he exclaimed, clearly not in favor of the regulation that requires car makers to sell a set proportion of their overall cars as EVs, regardless of consumer demand.

Center’s belief is clear: “You can tell manufacturers what to make but you can’t tell consumers what to buy.” This sentiment raises an important debate about the balance between government regulations and consumer choice in the automotive industry.

While Center may have his reservations about the ZEV mandate, it’s worth considering the perspective of the UK government, which is aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote the adoption of electric vehicles. The mandate is seen as a crucial step towards achieving these environmental goals.

However, Center’s skepticism towards government intervention in the market is understandable, especially in a country like the US where regulations are often a contentious issue. With the impending return of Donald Trump to the White House, executives like Center are likely preparing for potential changes in government policies that could impact the automotive industry.

Ultimately, the debate over the ZEV mandate highlights the complex dynamics between government regulations, consumer preferences, and industry interests. As the automotive industry continues to evolve towards a more sustainable future, finding a balance between these competing factors will be key to driving progress.
