Kia is set to launch the global version of its popular EV5 electric SUV, which has already been a success in the Chinese market. The EV5, first unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show in 2023, boasts dimensions similar to the Tesla Model Y, making it a competitive option in the electric SUV market. With a starting price of just over $20,000 in China, the EV5 offers impressive performance and range.
The base model of the EV5 comes with a CLTC range of 329 miles from a 64.2 kWh BYD Blade battery, while the longer-range model can achieve up to 447 miles from an 88.1 kWh battery. In comparison, the Tesla Model Y offers a CLTC driving range of up to 368 miles. Despite being more affordable than the Model Y in China, the EV5 has been a key player in Kia’s resurgence in the Chinese market, with over 200,000 units sold last year.
The global launch of the EV5 is eagerly anticipated, with production scheduled to begin later this year at Kia’s Autoland Gwangju manufacturing plant in South Korea. The new global model will feature several upgrades compared to the Chinese version, including updated design elements borrowed from Kia’s EV6 and EV9 models. The interior will also see improvements, with a new center console and the latest ccNC infotainment system with dual 12.3″ screens.
One significant change in the global version of the EV5 is the switch from a lower-cost LFP battery to a higher-density NCM option, which may result in a price increase in some markets. The EV5 will be launched in new markets such as South Korea, Europe, and Canada, but unfortunately, it is not expected to be available in the US. In North America, the EV5 will be exclusive to the Canadian market, offering FWD and AWD powertrains with two battery size options and a range of up to 310 miles.
Overall, the Kia EV5 presents a compelling option for electric SUV buyers, with its competitive pricing, range, and performance. Would you consider buying the EV5 over the Tesla Model Y? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
