The Kia PV5: An Affordable Electric Van with Impressive Features

The Kia PV5 has been unveiled as an electric van that offers great value for money, coming in at a price of €30,000 (approximately £25,000, excluding VAT), which is less expensive than a diesel Ford Transit Custom. This marks the first model in Kia’s new line of vehicles called Platform Beyond Vehicles (PBVs), with a larger PV7 set to follow in two years, taking on competitors like the Transit Custom and the Volkswagen ID Buzz.

Based on a commercial vehicle-focused version of the Kia EV3 hatchback’s 400V E-GMP platform, the PV5 has been redesigned to feature a flat rear load bay and enhanced payload capacity. It is equipped with a single front-mounted electric motor delivering 161bhp, and buyers can choose from three different battery options. The top-tier 71.2kWh battery promises a range of up to 249 miles, although details for the mid-range 51.5kWh and 43.3kWh batteries have not been released yet. Charging from 10% to 80% takes approximately 30 minutes, regardless of the battery size selected.

The PV5 will be available in various configurations, including cargo, crew-cab, passenger, and wheelchair-accessible (WAV) models. Additionally, an off-road-focused variant is in the works, and Kia has partnered with conversion companies like Westfalia to offer bespoke models such as campers. Inside, all versions feature seating for two upfront, while the crew cab, passenger van, and WAV options include a second row with three seats.

The interior of the PV5 is equipped with two display screens – a 7.0-inch screen for instrumentation and a 12.9-inch screen for infotainment, running on Google’s Android Automotive operating system. This means users have access to an app store where they can install business-specific applications. While the exact load volume and payload capacity have not been disclosed, the cargo van version of the PV5 can easily accommodate a standard Euro pallet.

In conclusion, the Kia PV5 is a promising addition to the electric van market, offering a cost-effective and efficient option for businesses and individuals looking to go electric. With its range of configurations, impressive battery options, and advanced technology features, the PV5 is set to make a significant impact in the commercial vehicle segment.
