Kia President Confirms Plans for Entry-Level Electric Model
Kia is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with an entry-level model, according to company president Ho Sung Song. Speaking at the brand’s EV Day event, Song revealed that Kia is considering introducing a new electric car to appeal to a wider audience.
While details are still being finalized, Song mentioned that the potential entry-level model could be a city car positioned below the upcoming EV2. This new model would compete with the likes of the Renault Twingo and Volkswagen ID 1, offering a more affordable option for customers looking to transition to electric vehicles.
The speculated EV1 could be priced around €25,000, bridging the gap between the EV2 crossover and the existing EV3. Song emphasized the importance of targeting a lower price point to attract a broader customer base.
“If we want to move to the late majority customer target group, definitely we need a lower size of model – or a lower-price model – and we are internally studying what will be our entry EV models, apart from our EV2,” Song explained.
He hinted at the possibility of unveiling an EV1 concept next year, with a production model expected to hit the market in 2027. This timeline aligns with Kia’s strategy to introduce a more affordable electric option in the coming years.
These developments echo Song’s previous statements about Kia’s long-term plans for electric city cars. He emphasized the need for sub-€25,000 EVs to replace models like the Picanto and attract a wider range of customers to electric vehicles.
With Kia’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup, the introduction of an entry-level model could mark a significant step towards making electric cars more accessible to consumers.
