The Heart of the Evo37: A Tribute to Claudio Lombardi

When it comes to the Evo37, the engine takes center stage, overshadowing even the chassis and aesthetics of the car. At the core of this exceptional powertrain is Claudio Lombardi, a legendary figure in the automotive world.

Lombardi’s expertise in powertrain development was first showcased during his time at Lancia, where he spearheaded the creation of the Group B 037. Later, at Ferrari’s Formula 1 division, he engineered the iconic 3.5-litre Tipo 043 V12 engine, renowned for its melodic exhaust note. Decades later, Lombardi collaborated with Betti to revamp the 2.2-litre four-cylinder steel block of the 037 for the Evo37 project, ensuring that it stayed true to its roots.

One of the key challenges was integrating the Volumex supercharger and turbocharger, replicating the setup used in the Delta S4 with a potent 500bhp output. While the turbocharger kicks in at higher engine speeds, providing a surge of power, the supercharger ensures immediate throttle response. This dual-charged configuration sets the Evo37 apart, delivering a formidable performance.

Despite the potential for higher power outputs, the current calibration of the Evo37’s engine balances performance and reliability. With approximately 415bhp on tap and a weight of just 1050kg, the Evo37 offers a compelling power-to-weight ratio comparable to modern sports cars like the BMW M2 CS.

The Evo37’s engine emanates a raw and aggressive sound, reminiscent of classic racing engines. The combination of straight-cut gears and the distinctive engine note creates an immersive driving experience, evoking nostalgia for a bygone era of motorsport.

Behind the wheel, the Evo37 delivers exhilarating acceleration and precise handling, thanks to its responsive steering and lightweight construction. While it retains the essence of a classic rally car, the Evo37 is surprisingly drivable on public roads, offering a blend of performance and practicality.

On the track, the Evo37 truly comes to life, showcasing its authentic powertrain and dynamic capabilities. The seamless integration of the electric supercharger and turbocharger results in a thrilling acceleration, accompanied by a symphony of induction and exhaust noises.

In conclusion, the Evo37 pays homage to its legendary predecessor while embracing modern technology and engineering. With Claudio Lombardi’s expertise at its core, the Evo37 embodies the spirit of classic rally cars, offering a truly unique driving experience that is sure to captivate enthusiasts and purists alike.
