Barrick Mining Corp. and Komatsu have recently inked a $440 million deal that will see Komatsu deliver electric and electrified mining equipment assets to Barrick’s Reko Diq copper-gold project in Pakistan. This partnership signifies a significant step towards decarbonizing the mining industry, with the aim of reducing emissions and lowering the carbon footprint associated with mining operations.

The highlight of this deal is the introduction of the 400-ton PC4000-11E hydraulic mining excavator by Komatsu. This innovative equipment combines the digging force of traditional diesel machines with the reduced carbon emissions of electric-powered machinery. Mark Bristow, Barrick’s president and CEO, expressed confidence in Komatsu’s equipment, citing its proven performance and reliability in mining operations worldwide. The collaboration between the two companies aims to support Barrick’s vision for sustainable mining practices at the Reko Diq project.

The new electric drives featured in the Komatsu PC4000-11E and P&H electric rope shovel are designed to significantly reduce job site emissions by up to 95%. When combined with the Komatsu Trolley Truck Assist System, the hydraulic excavator offers a 50% savings in the total cost of ownership compared to conventional diesel-driven equipment. Real-world data from pilot programs using the PC4000-11E has already demonstrated a 47% savings in total cost of ownership.

Peter Buhles, Vice President Sales and Service at Komatsu Germany GmbH – Mining Division, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting customers in their transition towards more sustainable and efficient mining operations. The order placed by Barrick Mining includes a mix of ultra-class haul trucks, mining excavators, rope shovels, and wheel loaders, with the first deliveries expected to arrive at the Pakistani operations in early 2026.

The push towards electric and autonomous heavy mining equipment is gaining momentum globally, driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions and operational costs. Companies like Hyundai, Bobcat, Volvo CE, Caterpillar, and others are exploring innovative concepts to meet the sustainability goals of the mining industry. The introduction of electric locomotives like the Fortescue Infinity Train further demonstrates the potential for cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions in mining operations.

In conclusion, the partnership between Barrick Mining and Komatsu represents a significant step towards sustainable mining practices in the industry. By leveraging innovative electric and electrified mining equipment, both companies aim to reduce emissions, lower operational costs, and drive towards a more sustainable future for mining operations worldwide.
