Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor, supported by Stellantis NV, has recently entered into a collaboration with Myanmar’s NPK Motor to assemble vehicles in the Southeast Asian country using a KD (Knocked Down) model. This move marks Leapmotor’s expansion into the Southeast Asian market, aiming to widen its international presence.
The strategic partnership agreement was signed on November 25, with Leapmotor set to assemble vehicles in Myanmar through a KD model. This trade-specific method involves importing parts in bulk kits and assembling them locally. The KD model includes CKD (Complete Knocked Down), SKD (Semi Knocked Down), and DKD (Direct Knocked Down), depending on the number of parts received by the producing country.
Although the specific model for assembly in Myanmar was not disclosed in Leapmotor’s press release, it is suggested that the company may opt for SKD assembly. In SKD, major components such as the engine and chassis are pre-assembled into modules, requiring the importing country to complete the remaining assembly work.
NPK Motor, Myanmar’s leading NEV-selling car dealer engaged in manufacturing, trading, and sales, will extend professional support for the KD project. This collaboration aims to enhance the cost advantage of Leapmotor’s products in the local market and introduce advanced NEV offerings to Myanmar.
Established in 2015, Leapmotor is among China’s early entrants in the new car-making sector. The company currently offers models like T03, C01, C10, C11, and C16 in China, with most models available in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants.
In the January-October period, Leapmotor recorded deliveries of 211,038 vehicles, reflecting a 97.18% year-on-year increase. The company aims to achieve sales of 250,000 vehicles in 2024 and 500,000 vehicles in 2025.
Collaborating with Stellantis, Europe’s second-largest automaker by sales, Leapmotor has commenced vehicle sales in over 10 European countries. The company’s expansion into Myanmar signifies its strategic growth plans and commitment to offering innovative NEV solutions globally.
