Lexus ES primed for bold electric reinvention in Shanghai next week

The upcoming Lexus ES is set to take on the BMW i5 and Audi A6 E-tron with a bold new generation that will be unveiled at the Shanghai motor show. This new model is expected to offer electric power for the first time, making it a global flagship model for Lexus. This move raises questions about the future of the larger LS saloon, which was recently dropped from the UK lineup due to slow sales.

Despite the LS’s departure, the ES has historically performed well in the UK market, with nearly 2000 sales in 2023. However, it still remains a niche player compared to competitors like the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6. The addition of electric power to the new ES could attract more fleet buyers and contribute to Toyota’s EV sales mix.

While details of the new ES’s specifications have not been released yet, Lexus has trademarked the names ES350e and ES500e, hinting at potential EV options similar to the Lexus RZ crossover. The RZ350e features a single motor on the front axle with 221bhp and a 77kWh battery offering a range of 357 miles. The RZ500e has a twin-motor powertrain with 376bhp and a range of 311 miles.

In addition to the electric options, Lexus has also trademarked the ES350h name, indicating that a hybrid version will be available. This hybrid setup is likely to be similar to the one found in the NX350h SUV, producing a combined 241bhp and offering low-speed engine-off driving for improved fuel efficiency.

A preview image of the new ES shows a sleek and aerodynamic design, emphasizing efficiency and range. The Shanghai debut of the ES highlights its significance in the Chinese market, where saloons remain popular. Since 2017, the ES has been the top imported car in China, showcasing its strong presence in the region.

Overall, the new Lexus ES promises to be a competitive option in the premium saloon segment, offering electric and hybrid powertrains to cater to a wide range of customers. Its global flagship status and focus on efficiency and performance make it a standout choice in the evolving automotive landscape.
