LG Electronics Inc and MediaTek recently unveiled their groundbreaking Concurrent Multi-User (CMU) in-vehicle infotainment system at the Auto Shanghai 2025 show. This innovative system, the first of its kind to utilize Google’s Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS), allows passengers to simultaneously use multiple displays on a single Android OS. LG touts this technology as a solution to the increasing demand for enhanced in-vehicle content consumption as displays become larger and more diverse in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) era.
The CMU framework offers a seamless multi-device Android experience within a unified system, enabling drivers and passengers to utilize various features independently. For example, the driver can use the navigation system while the front-seat passenger streams videos and the rear-seat passengers play games, all in compliance with safety regulations.
Unlike traditional IVI systems that require multiple Android Virtual Machines (VMs) for Center Information Display (CID) and Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) displays, the CMU technology simplifies the setup by running everything on a single Android OS. This not only reduces processing, memory, and storage requirements but also minimizes system load.
LG emphasizes that the CMU framework revolutionizes in-vehicle experiences by creating personalized digital spaces for passengers. Each user can log into their display, connect Bluetooth headphones or gaming controllers, manage privacy settings, and share movies, gaming, and audio across multiple displays. Parents can even set parental controls to ensure a safe and age-appropriate experience for children.
MediaTek’s corporate vice president, Mike Chang, expressed excitement about the future of in-vehicle experiences enabled by the live CMU framework capability on the MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit MT2718. These solutions meet automotive-grade reliability standards, giving automotive OEMs the confidence to create new designs.
Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG Vehicle Solution Company, highlighted their commitment to transforming vehicles into true living spaces on wheels with unprecedented connectivity, entertainment, and personalization. LG will continue to collaborate with industry leaders like MediaTek to develop integrated, intelligent solutions that enhance the in-vehicle experience.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, advancements like the CMU framework are driving innovation and enhancing the overall driving experience for consumers. This collaboration between LG Electronics and MediaTek marks a significant milestone in the development of next-generation IVI systems that cater to the diverse needs of modern passengers.
